Our Club

The Portage Amateur Radio Club, Inc. is an Ohio, non-profit corporation dedicated to "Public Service" through amateur radio and to improving the amateur radio service.

Founded in 1979, the club was organized when the members of the Portage county Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) group saw the need for a parent group to support the ARES and the need for amateurs to hold regular meetings where information could be exchanged and where hams could get together and enjoy their common interests.

With the increased interest caused by the club, local hams began talking about the need for a repeater in the county. In the spring of 1980 club members loaned the club money to purchase the equipment to build a repeater and the 145.39 machine went on the air.

In March of 1981, the club filed to incorporate as a non-profit corporation. In 1984 the club became affiliated with the American Radio Relay League (ARRL). When the ARRL launched the Special Service Club (SSC) program we applied and became one of the early SSCs in Ohio.

When the Federal Communications Commission turned the amateur license exams over to Volunteer Exam Coordinators (VEC), our club became the first in the area to administer exams under this program and was the very first in the country to give walk in exams.

In 1986 we saw the need to provide more income for the club and held the first Portage Amateur Radio Club HAMFAIR © (hamfest), which is growing every year.

The club also publishes a newsletter. This by-monthly publication serves to keep members up to date on what is happening in the amateur community and the club.

Club meetings are held the 4th Wednesday of every month at 7:00 PM at Maplewood Career Center, 7075 State Route 88, Ravenna, Ohio There is no meeting in December, instead we have our Christmas party in place of a regular meeting.

Membership is available to anyone interested in amateur radio. There are two types of memberships. Full Membership, with voting privileges, for the licensed amateur and Associate Membership for those who are not licensed but, have an interest in amateur radio. Annual dues are $12.00 for single membership or $15.00 for family membership. First year dues are pro-rated beginning on the month of acceptance. All applications for membership are accepted subject to consideration of the membership.
