Portage County Sky-Warn

The Sky-Warn program consists of a network of amateur radio operators who are trained spotters and use their skills to provide information on severe weather to the National Weather Service.

The Sky-Warn program in Portage County is operated by the Portage County Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES). The Sky-Warn Net operates on the PARC repeater, on 145.390 MHz.

A Net Control Station takes reports from participants and passes along information received from other sources. Pertinent information is relayed on to the National Weather Service and the local Emergency Management Agency. In addition to information passed along to specific agencies the net is also monitored by several local police and fire departments.

The information passed along on the net consists of reports on high wind, heavy rain fall, large hail and tornadoes and other related phenomena.

Annual training sessions are offered and special sessions may be set up by contacting the Portage County ARES group or through the Portage Amateur Radio Club. Anyone wishing to get more information can check in on one of the club nets, or contact the Portage Amateur Radio Club
